This song has been a staple Desi party number since college and almost every Indian wedding this century. UK-based DJ/producer Bally Sagoo created something magical with Punjabi singer Hans Raj Hans with Aaja Nachle, fusing an electronic and techno sensibility with Punjabi folk. In my own cover of this modern Punjabi Bhangra classic, I created a hip-hop groove, staccato and square in contrast with the flowing and bouncy swing of a typical Bhangra beat, with an energy that crescendos into a gap on the 8th beat before resolving back on the downbeat. That said, there’s still room for a dhol player to join in and do her/his thing over this track.
